In the late 90's and early 2000's In the late 1990s pharmaceutical companies were pushing opioid pain relievers and reassuring doctors that patients would not become addicted.  With big bonuses for increased sales, prescription numbers rose drastically. This led to many people quickly becoming dependent and addicted to these drugs. Pill mills popped up all over the US and overdose deaths skyrocketed. The CDC states that between 1999 and 2018 close to 450,000 people died from opioid overdoses.
